ARTHUR JOSEPH BARSKY, M.D. 1899–1982 The Hand--February 1983 OBITUARY ARTHUR JOSEPH BARSKY, M.D. 1899-1982 The British hand surgeons have lost one of their greatest friends by the death of Arthur Barsky on February 9th, 1982. He was born in January 1899, the son of a New York physician, and studied dentistry before his interest in facial reconstruction led him to qualify in medicine also. He became skilled in Plastic Surgery, and part of his training was as a fellow with Sir Harold Gillies. During the war his interest in the hand, led him to become Chief of one of the Hand Services set up by Surgeon-General Kirk and Dr. Sterling Bunnell, and this was the organisation that led to the development of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, of which he became President in 1965. It was during his Presidency that he organised the foundation of the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand, of which the details were settled on a fleeting visit to London Airport on the way back from Saigon.
