1 Introduction Introduction G. A. Webb, Scientific Editor It is a pleasure for me to introduce Section C of volume 99 of Annual Reports on the Progress of Chemistry, which contains reviews highlighting recent developments in various areas of physical chemistry and chemical physics. Surfactants and their applications are covered by L. L. Schramm, E. N. Stasiuk and D. G. Marangoni; H. R. Powell reports on Molecular structure from X-ray diffraction; Electrical properties of organic materials are reviewed by J. Sworakowski and J. Ulanski; Water solvation dynamics in the bulk and in the hydration layer of proteins and self-assemblies is the topic of the review by B. Bagchi; A. Juris reports on Recent developments in photo- and redox-active dendrimers; The structure and rheology of aqueous gels are reviewed by J. P. A. Fairclough and A. I. Norman; Photochromism is covered by S. Kobatake and M. Irie. I wish to express my gratitude to all of these authors for their timely and interesting accounts. My thanks also go to the production staff at the Royal Society of Chemistry for their help in the prompt appearance of this volume. DOI: 10.1039/b208511a Annu. Rep. Prog. Chem., Sect.
