We are ready for RCN congress

We are ready for RCN congress On Monday evening, RCN older people’s adviser Nicky Hayes will present the RCN’s older people project, a major piece of work reviewing quality of care, images of nursing and staffing levels in older people’s services, particularly hospital wards. The role of the nurse in facilitating advance care planning will be explored on Tuesday lunchtime. This session will address ethical issues relating to working with people with dementia and provide a forum for discussing the evidence base, relevant tools and RCN guidance on assisted suicide. The RCN’s ongoing work on caring for people with dementia in hospital will be presented on Tuesday evening and RCN dementia lead Rachel Thompson will be running sessions for students and healthcare assistants on understanding the experience of dementia on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Tuesday evening will see the launch of a ten-point plan for supporting carers. The older people’s forum event on Wednesday evening will focus on how the role of registered nurses is evolving in care homes, including discussion of innovative models of care. The forum also plans to offer copies of the RCN discussion and guidance document, Older People in Care Homes: Sex, Sexuality and Intimate Relationships. The number of forum members attending RCN congress this year has been halved because of funding reductions, but we will do our best to ensure that the voices of older people’s nurses are heard. We look forward to meeting you.
