Geraldine Holt CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST, SOUTH LONDON & MAUDSLEY NHS TRUST, AND SENIOR LECTURER, ESTIA CENTRE, INSTITUTE OF PSYCHIATRY In May 2002 a conference, Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Women with Learning Disability, was held at Guyâs Hospital, a joint venture between the Judith Trust and the Estia Centre, Guyâs. The aim was to enable discussion of the importance of good mental health for everyone, for good services for those who become mentally ill and for these services to be sensitive to the particular needs of women with learning disabilities. That was not to imply that there are not gender-specific issues for men, but, given the particular vulnerability of women to mental health problems and the adversity encountered by many with learning disabilities, they were chosen as the focus of the day. People attended from a number of organisations in the statutory and voluntary sectors. The debate informs this edition of the Learning Disability Review, and some of the speakers from that conference have contributed articles here.
