John Pitts is Vauxhall professor of socio-legal studies and director of the Vauxhall Centre for the Study of Crime at the University of Bedfordshire. Chris Fox leads the Crime and Social Policy Research Unit at Matrix Research and Consultancy Limited. He directs local and national research and evaluation projects with a focus on crime and criminal justice. Chris is a trustee of CSV (Community Service Volunteers). Chris Fox and John Pitts Editors This is a time of significant change for the world of community safety and last autumn the editors committed Community Safety Journal to being central to the debate on the future of community safety. At that point we pulled together a special edition (Volume 5, Issue 4) in which a number of policy-makers, researchers and frontline staff set out different visions of The Future of Community Safety. Following the success of that edition we were also able to bring together many of the same contributors to take part in a one-day conference with the same title that was held in London on 29 March 2007. The success of the special edition and the conference have convinced us that we should continue to focus on the future
