WAPOR News

WAPOR News International Journal of Public Opinion Research Vol. 15 No. 1 IN MEMORIAM JAN STAPEL (19172002) At the age of 84 one of the co-founders of WAPOR and ESOMAR has died. Jan Stapel served as WAPOR President from 195354. In 1981 he was the first person to receive the WAPOR Helen Dinerman award in recognition of his contributions to public opinion research. Jan Stapel was inspired and fascinated by the early work of George Gallup, who was the first to predict successfully the outcome of the American presidential elections in 1936. As a youngster he experimented in predicting the likeability of advertisements in newspapers and found to his own amazement that emotional appearance had a stronger power than rational reasoning. At the age of 28 he co-founded NIPO, which today is the largest research company in the Netherlands. Driven by personal interest and entrepreneurial flair, Jan played a key role in introducing political polling to the Netherlands. NIPO became a publicly well-known company, the icon for market research by free-publicity. Each week a not-for-profit organization was given the opportunity to place a free question in the omnibus, if they would publicize the results as NIPO found them.
