Lacuna vincta is a small herbivorous gastropod that feeds and lives on a variety of macroalgae within the rocky subtidal zone of New England. Field sampling and laboratory experiments were conducted in order to examine the seasonal abundance, feeding preference and growth of snails on different algal species. The results showed that there were differences in the seasonal abundance patterns of L. vincta populations on different algal species. In feeding preference experiments, L. vincta preferred Antithamnionella floccosa, Ulva lactuca and Laminaria saccharina , while the growth experiments demonstrated that growth rates of snails fed on L. saccharina tended to be higher than those fed on other algae. The results suggest that several factors including morphology and nutritional value of macroalgae may influence the patterns of seasonal abundance and feeding preference of this herbivorous snail. © The Malacological Society of London 2002 « Previous | Next Article » Table of Contents This Article J.
