Treatments were arranged in a RCB design and replicated three times in two-row blocks in a research orchard of ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Delicious’ cultivars planted at 8 ft tree spacing and 15 ft row spacing. Plots were sprayed at 80 gpa using a conventional air-blast sprayer manufactured by Durand Wayland Co. Because WAA is a sporadic pest, two applications of Mesurol 75W (12.0 oz/acre) were applied to the test orchard on 6 Jun and again on 21 Jun in an attempt to flare populations in the test and check plots. WAA was sampled pre-application (20 Jun, 29 Jun, 5 Jul) to determine population levels, as well as post-application (approximately7, 14, 28, 35 DAT) to determine efficacy. Because there are no recommended treatment threshold levels for WAA in NY apple orchards, treatments were applied when the percentages of terminal infestations exceeded 40% in all the plots. This occurred on 5 Jul and applications were made on 7 Jul. Treatments were sampled by counting the presence or absence of live WAA colonies on 100 terminals in each replicate. Data were subjected to an ANOVA, and means were separated with Student’s t-test. Seven days post-treatment, all test plots showed a severe drop in live colonies, including the untreated check plot. This population reduction could have at least partially resulted from drift, as the untreated plots were in close proximity to treated rows. The untreated plot had higher numbers of live colonies on every sampling date, but differences between the check plot and treatments were generally not statistically different. However, WAA populations in the 4.28 oz rate of sulfoxaflor and oil were significantly lower on 13 Jul than those in the check treatment. On 28 Jul, WAA populations were significantly lower in all of the treatments than in the check except for the lowest rate of sulfoxaflor plus oil. These results show that the higher rates of sulfoxaflor were as effective as the Movento standard. This research was supported in part by industry gift(s) of pesticides and/or research funding.
