Tagesordnung: Judenfrage: A German Debate in the Early Stages of the Weimar Republic LBI48-All:LBI48-All 23/4/08 23:30 Page 87 Tagesordnung: Judenfrage A German Debate in the Early Stages of the Weimar Republic* BY JÜRGEN MATTHÄUS The following “record of a discussion of Jewish questions” (Niederschrift einer Besprechung über Judenfragen) is based on a meeting held on 31 March 1919, from 11:30 until 13:15, at the Geschäftsstelle für Friedensverhandlungen in Berlin, Behrenstrasse 21. Presided over by Johann Heinrich Graf von Bernstorff, former ambassador to the United States, the meeting was attended by high-ranking politicians, bureaucrats, and representatives of Jewish organisations in Germany. Among the participants were the future Foreign Minister Walter Simons, Professor Moritz S. Sobernheim (according to the record associated with the Reichswirtschaftsministerium, but acting here in his capacity as Referent für jüdisch-politische Angelegenheiten at the Auswärtiges Amt), several officials involved in German occupation policy during the First World War including Hermann Struck, former Dezernent für jüdische Angelegenheiten on the staff of the Oberbefehlshaber Ost and later adviser to the German delegation to the Versailles peace conference, Eugen Fuchs of the Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (henceforth C.V.), Richard Lichtheim of the Zionistische Vereinigung für Deutschland (henceforth ZVfD), and – speaking more for themselves than for any par- ticular organisation or institution – http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Leo Baeck Institute Year Book Oxford University Press
