This article considers explanations for the attitudes towards racial issues of White Americans raised in an era of consensus on anti-racist social norms. Evidence from previous studies in the late s and early s suggested that cohorts then entering the electorate were more liberal on policy issues than their predecessors, but little different in their basic perceptions of racial inequalities in the USA.
