News from Societies Still French? France and the Challenge of Diversity, – This international conference at the University of Nottingham was organized by the Department of French and Francophone Studies on  March  to mark the final visit of Professor Alec G. Hargreaves in his honorary role of Special Professor. The inspir- ation for the conference was the thirtieth anniversary of a provocative cover story of Le Figaro Magazine. Juxtaposed with the image of a veiled Marianne, the headline read: ‘Serons- nous encore français dans trente ans?’ Thirty years later, as Professor Hargreaves had long intended, a group of speakers from France, Ireland and the UK gathered to address the question and its implications. Is the France of , a year which opened with terrorist acts in Paris, still French in the same way or to the same degree as the France of ? Where do the most significant challenges to ‘Frenchness’ now lie? How has France responded to the fears, challenges and opportunities associated with ethnic and cultural di- versity in ?
