AFRICAN AFFAIRS Memoirs from the Maelstrom: A Senegalese oral history of the First World War, by Joe Lunn. xiv + 264 pp. Oxford: James Currey, 1999. £16.95 paperback. ISBN 0-85255-638-1. At first sight, the title of this book may seem somewhat melodramatic. But when one has read the author's carefully considered text, his copious and well-documented references and his excellent note on his sources, written as well as oral, it becomes clear that Senegal between 1914 and 1918 was, indeed, in the grip of a military maelstrom. These staggering losses prompted the French government to raise a massive additional levy of soldiers from its colonies and to transport many of them to Europe to fight against the Germans. Between 1914 and 1918, almost 29,000 men were mobilized in Senegal -- 2.4 percent of its entire population -- and upwards of 15,000 fled to foreign colonies to escape recruitment. Thus, about 45,000 men were uprooted from Senegal by the Great War, representing 3.6 percent of its pre-war population. In all, nearly 140,000 West Africans from the French colonies were recruited
