Literary Cultures in History: Reconstructions from South Asia. Edited by Sheldon Pollock. University of California Press, 2003. 1066 pages. $80.00.

Literary Cultures in History: Reconstructions from South Asia. Edited by Sheldon Pollock.... 1030 Journal of the American Academy of Religion constructive. Hopefully, this rich volume is a beginning to ongoing work that will explore further the important issues raised. One particular limitation of the anthology is acknowledged by the editors and should thus be taken as a description of its particular location rather than a shortcoming: all essays concern Black Christianity and the Black church more particularly. Only one essay mentions Islam in passing and briefly discusses the Nation of Islam. A final suggestion for improvement is on an organizational level: in addition to essays being grouped into disciplinary categories, it would be helpful if the contextualizing introduction gave an overview of the arguments made and the issues at stake throughout the sections and the volume as a whole. Furthermore, some essays contain abstracts, others do not. Resolving these minor inconsisten- cies will make for a much more user-friendly anthology. As it is to be expected that this volume will find much use in the Black church and related academic venues, a second edition should provide the opportunity to further strengthen this provocative collection of essays. doi:10.1093/jaarel/lfl020 Claudia Schippert Advance Access publication October 6, 2006 University of Central Florida Literary Cultures http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of the American Academy of Religion Oxford University Press
