EXTERNAL AIRFLOW EFFECTS ON PERSONAL SAMPLING*

Abstract Personal samplers are being tested under realistic conditions, mounted on a full- scale human model in a wind tunnel. The model is aspirated using a purpose-built breathing simulator and the behaviour of the human head as a sampler is being investigated. A descrip tion of the apparatus and experimental technique is given, together with results of the initial trials. The collection efficiencies of some personal samplers have been determined over a range of particle size from 7 μm < d ≤ 70 μm, at an external windspeed of 1 ms −1 , with the model aspirated at 25 1. min −1 , 20 resps min −1 No direct influence of respiratory action on sampler efficiency has been detected.
