(F41b) COTTON: Gossypium hirsutum L., 'Delta and Pine Land NuCotn 33B' EVALUATION OF SELECTED SEED TREATMENTS AND TEMIK IN-FURROW FOR EARLY SEASON PEST CONTROL E. Burris LSU Agricultural Center Northeast Research Station PO Box 438 St. Joseph, LA 71366 Tel: (318) 766-4607 Fax: (318) 766-4278 eburris@agctr.lsu.edu R. Costello K. Sanders Thrips: Frankliniella spp. Delta and Pine Land NuCotn 33B was planted at a rate of four seed/row ft on a Bruin/Commerce silt loam 8 May. Plots were four rows (40-inch centers) x 45 ft replicated six times in an RCB design. Plots were planted with a John Deere 7100 series planter equipped with seed cone hoppers. Cruiser or Gaucho was applied in 0.07-0.51 oz of water/2 lb of seed in 1-gal zipper type plastic bag and shaken vigorously for 30 s. Granular Temik treatments were applied in-furrow with belt cone applicators mounted on the planter. Control of thrips adults and larvae was determined by randomly selecting five plants/plot on 27 May. Whole plant washing procedures were used to remove the insects and counts were made with the aid of a dissecting microscope. Plant density was determined by counting the total number of plants on the center two rows of each plot, averaging and dividing by 45 to determine plants/ft. Plots were mechanically harvested on 9 Oct with a John Deere 9930 spindle-type picker to determine lb seedcotton/acre. Data were subjected to ANOVA and means separated according to DMRT. Because of non-hohogeneous variances, thrips larvae were transformed using log and subjected to ANOVA. Original means are presented for clarity. All insecticide treatments reduced thrips larvae compared with the nontreated. Cruiser 5FS seed treatments resulted in fewer thrips on seedling cotton than Temik 15 G at 3.5 lb/acre. Insecticide treatments were equivalent and were all greater than the nontreated.
