Leonard Cotton aphid (CA): Aphis gossypii (Glover) Cotton seed were planted into a Gigger-Gilbert silt loam soil on 23 Apr at the Macon Ridge location of the Northeast Research Station near Winnsboro, LA (Franklin Parish). Plots consisted of 4 rows (40-inch) x 50 feet. Treatments were arranged in a RBD with four replications. Twenty plant terminals infested with Cotton aphids (CA) were tagged in each plot on the center two rows, prior to spraying. Insecticides were applied on 1 Jun with a tractor-mounted sprayer and CO system calibrated to deliver 10 gpa through TeeJet 80015 nozzles (2 per row) at 30 psi. CA control was evaluated by sampling 10 tagged plant terminals per plot at 3 and 7 DAT. Plant samples were processed using whole-plant washing procedures to remove aphids, and aphids were counted using a dissecting microscope. Data were analyzed according to ANOVA and means separated according to DMRT. Less than 0.1 inch rainfall occurred between the time of insecticide application and 7 DAT. At 3 DAT, plots treated with Bidrin, Intruder (0.025 and 0.036 lb AI/acre), Furadan, or Centric (0.03 and 0.04 lb AI/acre) had significantly lower numbers of aphids compared to plots treated with Trimax (0.031 lb AI/acre) or non-treated plots. At 7 DAT, aphid densities had begun to decrease and there were no significant differences among treatments.
