Progesterone inhibits the uterine growth produced by cstronc in rats spayed at 30 days of age; this antagonism is apparent only at intermediate response levels, produced by estrone at doses of 0.3 to3.0μg. DCA only inhibited the response produced by 3 μg of estrone. Previous studies also indicated that the uterine response produced by estrone at 1–3 μg was most sensitive to blockage by testosterone or estriol. This appears to be an example of other steroid hormones acting as estrone “buffers” at critical physiological levels. The uterine growth produced by 2 μg of estrone in rats spayed at 100 days of age, was inhibited by progesterone and DCA, unaffected by cortisone acetate, and augmented by estriol and testosterone propionate.
