Scott Email: wss41@msstate.edu Wes McPherson Email: jwm177@msstate.edu Dung Bao Email: db3@msstate.edu Corn earworm: Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) Corn hybrids were planted on a silt loam soil in Starkville, MS on 12 Apr to evaluate the differences in traits against corn ear worm damage and yield. Plot size was 4 rows by 30 feet long planted on 38 inch centers. Statistical design was a randomized complete block with 4 replications. Estimates of corn earworm densities were determined by shucking back corn ears at corn phonological growth stage R4 and R6. A 20 ear sample from the center two rows of each plot was taken and damaged kernels and number of larvae was recorded for each ear, respectively. Plots were harvested on 3 Sep, and yields were recorded in bushels per acre. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and means were separated using a Fisher’s Protected LSD (P ≤ 0.05). Hybrids with the GEN traits had fewer damaged kernels and larvae present at each sample date compared to all other hybrids in the experiment. All hybrids with BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) yielded higher than the non-BT hybrids tested. Table 1.
