Arthropod Management Tests 2012, Vol. 37 doi: 10.4182/amt.2012.F36 (F36) COTTON: Gossypium hirsutum (L.) ‘Phytogen 315RF’ D. R. Cook Mississippi State University Delta Research and Extension Center Stoneville, MS 38776 Phone: (662) 686-9311 Fax: (662) 686-7336 E-mail: dcook@ext.msstate.edu J. Gore Tarnished plant bug (TPB): Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) Selected insecticides were evaluated for control of TPB at the Delta Research and Extension Center (Washington County). Cotton seed were planted on a Bosket very fine sandy loam soil on 3 Jun (Phytogen 315RF). Plot size was four rows (40 in centers) by 50 feet. Treatments were replicated four times in a RCB design. Treatments were applied on 7, 14, and 24 Aug with a high clearance sprayer and compressed air charged spray system calibrated to deliver 10 gpa through Teejet TX-10 hollow cone nozzles (2/row). Treatment efficacy was determined by sampling the two center rows of each plot with a 2.5 ft black drop cloth (sample of 2 drops per plot (2rows) for a total of 10 row feet) at 3, 6, days after treatment 1 (DAT1), 3 and 6 DAT2, and 2 and 7 DAT3. Plots were harvested on 4 Nov with a mechanical harvester. Seedcotton weights were converted to lint yield per acre using a lint percentage of 38%. Data were subjected to ANOVA and means separated according to Fisher’s Protected Least Significant Difference. There were no significant differences among treatments for numbers of TPB nymphs at 3 and 6 DAT1 and 3 DAT2. At 6DAT2, all of the insecticide treated plots had significantly fewer TPB nymphs compared to the non-treated plots. Plots treated with Acephate, Bidrin, Carbine, Leverage, Endigo, or Brigade had significantly fewer nymphs compared to plots treated with Trimax Pro or Intruder. At 2DAT3, all of the insecticide treated plots had significantly fewer TPB nymphs compared to the non-treated plots. Plots treated with Bidrin had significantly lower densities of nymphs compared to plots treated with Vydate, Centric, Carbine, or Intruder. At 7DAT3, all of the insecticide treated plots had significantly fewer TPB nymphs compared to the non-treated plots. Plots treated with Acephate or Endigo had significantly lower densities of nymphs compared to plots treated with Vydate, Trimax Pro, or Intruder. There were no significant differences among treatments for lint yield. No. plant bug nymphs / 10 row feet Rate/acre Lint Yield Treatment/form.
