Box 748 Tifton, GA 31793 Tobacco thrips: Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) This test was conducted in a commercial onion field in Toombs County, Georgia. Samples of thrips adults collected indicated that the species composition consisted of almost 100% tobacco thrips. Plot size was 4 rows (on one 6-ft bed) by 25 ft, with a non-treated bed between plots. The experimental design was a RCB with four replications. Treatments were applied 16 Apr with a CO -pressurized backpack sprayer (60 psi; 30 gpa; four hollow cone nozzles per row). Adult thrips were counted on five randomly selected plants in each plot on each sample date. Immature thrips were not counted, but represented a very low percentage of the population. Data were subjected to ANOVA and means were separated using LSD (P ≤ 0.05). All insecticide treatments reduced thrips populations at 3 DAT. Lannate, Assail and both Pyrethroids (Mustang Max and Warrior) provided the greatest reductions at 3 DAT. At 6 DAT, thrips had moved back into the Lannate, Diazinon and V-10112 plots, with less than 40% control in these treatments. The two pyrethroid treatments and Assail showed longer residual activity, with the pyrethroid treatments having the lowest numerical densities at 6 DAT.
