W. G. Sebald's literary essay Luftkrieg und Literatur and Jörg Friedrich's historical work Der Brand have recently renewed debate about the aerial bombing of Germany and about Germany's sense of victimisation. This essay explores the merits and pitfalls of this discussion as it appears in work by Sebald, Friedrich, and the novelist Gert Ledig. It explores their work in light of Walter Benjamin's “Critique of Violence”, aiming to explain how the recent discussion contributes to Benjamin's critical project.
