As we move into 2018, we at IJE thank our readers, authors, editors and reviewers, all of whom help us to achieve our ambition to publish new, robust and useful epidemiological research to contribute to the improvement of health worldwide. We are fully aware of the IJE’s dependence on you all. We are also grateful to our publisher, Oxford University Press, and to the International Epidemiological Association, which provides our financial support. We welcome your comments and suggestions about how we editors can improve the journal. Epidemiology is changing – rapidly. The expanding availability and accessibility of large datasets, the deepening of analytical capacity through advancing information technology, and the growing insight into the genotypes of individuals and populations, coupled with increasing sophistication of obtaining targeted measures of environmental exposure, are a challenge for any journal if it is to remain relevant. A glance at this issue reveals papers that address social determinants and their epidemiological power, trends in mortality, prenatal and early life exposures, mental health, infectious diseases and new research methods. A book review explores the intersection of systems thinking and epidemiology. Developments in epidemiological theory, especially mathematical ones, attract the interest of doctoral students and other research workers who have an eye on the future. A growing appreciation of the interdependence of human and other biological and ecological systems has led to the emergence of a new discipline, ‘planetary health’, in which the contribution of epidemiology awaits definition. Being alert to new ways in which epidemiology can contribute to effective resolution of persistent problems, such as health disparities, the IJE tries to respond to these developments. This goes well beyond definitional debate – what is and is not epidemiology? It extends to the question of what practical contribution epidemiology can make to pragmatically workable solutions applied in a complex world. Collaborations across disciplines, such as sociology, demography, genetics and public health, commonly underpin epidemiological publications in this and other epidemiology journals. How to accommodate such diverse challenges within the journal requires us to examine the utility of the way in which we order and present its contents in print and online. In 2018, themed sections will be devoted to new topics, with invited contributions from epidemiologists working in those fields. ‘Education Corner’, which we are refreshing, will publish material useful and practical for teaching. The work of the IJE depends heavily on our editorial team, including our editorial board members who recruit reviewers to examine proposed publications. The interaction of editors, reviewers and authors is frequently lively and always educational. We depend heavily upon our reviewers for their careful contributions to ensure that the IJE’s standards are maintained. The names of those who reviewed for us at least once in 2017 are listed in the following pages – we thank them for their contribution.
