Treasurer’s Report for Financial Year (FY) 2015 Prepared by Juliette de Meaux, SMBE Treasurer Society’s Net Assets as of 31 May2016: $3,404,479.26 Cash account $2,863,924.76 Total CDs: $185,197.96 Prepaid Expenses: $285,148.96 Accrued Expenses: $10,964.00 FY 2015 Revenues This report covers the period of 1 June 2015 to 31 May Membership Dues 41,657.85 $ 2016. The society remains in outstanding financial health, Oxford Journal MBE 576,282.00 $ with a net benefit of $416,276.27. The continuing success of Oxford Journal GBE 493,372.00 $ our two journals, Molecular Biology and Evolution and Unrestricted Donation 194.00 $ Genome Biology and Evolution, allowed us to collect Interest Income 1,727.73 $ Miscellaneous Revenue 86,809.50 $ $791,667.00 revenue for the (calendar) year 2015. Thanks to Total Revenues 1,200,043.08 $ the accounting support provided by Allen Press, the accrued accounting method has now replaced the cash accounting Expenses Travel method used in previous financial reports. As a consequence, Senior Editor Travel 22,921.87 $ the revenue presented in financial year 2015 is no longer Associate Editors Travel 127,965.97 $ counted as the revenue collected in the calendar year. Editor-In-Chief Travel 5,443.51 $ The society used its income to publish its two journals, Council Travel 34,109.40 $ Molecular Biology and Evolution and Genome Biology and Press Mtg. Registration 3,193.56 $ Total Travel 193,634.31 $ Evolution, and to support its annual meeting, which was Prize & Awards 12,750.00 $ held in Vienna (Austria) in 2015. This included providing Fitch Symposium Travel 8,885.79 $ graduate and postdoctoral travel awards, funding the Undergraduate Diversity Travel 9,521.34 $ Walter Fitch Prize Symposium (a cash prize for the winner Young Investigator Travel 65,882.65 $ and travel funds for all eight contestants), running the Total Prize & Awards 97,039.78 $ Operating Expenses 34,233.20 $ Undergraduate Diversity Mentoring Program, supporting Treasurer 31.11 $ the travel and accommodation of Council members and Corporation Fee 100.00 $ providing travel incentives for Associate Editors of both Bank Charges 2,053.90 $ journals. We also supported three satellite meetings on Tax Preparation 3,996.91 $ Total Operations 40,415.12 $ important, focused and timely topics related to molecular Editorial Activities evolutionary biology. MBE Editing 84,945.92 $ For the first time this year, SMBE funded childcare awards, MBE Highlight Honoraria 16,558.00 $ which with their non-bureaucratic and flexible format mark- GBE Editing 77,459.81 $ edly facilitated the participation of young parents to our an- GBE Highlight Honoraria 4,498.50 $ Total Editorial 183,462.23 $ nual meeting.
