Goodbye print version of the Interactive Journal: the times they are a changin’ Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery, Online only In 1997, the previous Editor-in-Chief, Ludwig von Segesser, had the foresight of starting a sister journal to accompany the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EJCTS) with the aim of focussing on innovative publication formats and content (Fig. 1). As you all know, this journal, Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery (ICVTS), has grown and matured over the last 2 decades. After the initial growing pains, the journal was finally handed its first journal impact factor in 2012 by Thomson Reuters, which is and will remain an important quality marker for scientific journals. Since then, there has been no turning back for ICVTS, with its journal impact factor steadily increasing over the years and a steady stream of well-written and well-cited articles (Fig. 2 and Table 1 [1–10]). This positive development is even more remarkable, considering the fact that growth of the impact factor has never been a focus at ICVTS but the experimentation of new publication styles and concepts. In line with this spirit of innovation, the time has come for the next big experiment: from July 2018, ICVTS will become a full-fledged open access journal, which is additionally free-of-charge for submitting authors. I will admit that I have always loved reading the hard copy of the ICVTS. Even though I am familiar with the content, I like the way I can thumb through the pages. Nevertheless, after the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) decided to move the ICVTS online only, I tried out electronic reading myself and to my surprise found it quite enjoyable. When e-mail alerts are activated, content of interest can be accessed in a timelier fashion and more selectively. The increasing number of videos submitted together with the respective article can be viewed directly, making the written content more meaningful. Other more obvious advantages are that it: is more environmentally friendly, reduces printing and postage costs and is less bulky and saves shelf space. While the initial scepticism is surely legitimate, ultimately, the move to go online-only and keep the content freely available is a logical and timely step forward for ICVTS. Given your continued support, we are convinced that this move will be a smooth one, and we hope to continue providing you with high-quality, ‘online-only’ papers. A final tip: if you also love to hold a hard copy in your hands and read the ICVTS in the old-school way as I do, you may want to hang on to this issue as a collector’s piece! I will admit that I have always loved reading the hard copy of the ICVTS. Even though I am familiar with the content, I like the way I can thumb through the pages. Nevertheless, after the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) decided to move the ICVTS online only, I tried out electronic reading myself and to my surprise found it quite enjoyable. When e-mail alerts are activated, content of interest can be accessed in a timelier fashion and more selectively. The increasing number of videos submitted together with the respective article can be viewed directly, making the written content more meaningful. Other more obvious advantages are that it: is more environmentally friendly, reduces printing and postage costs and is less bulky and saves shelf space. While the initial scepticism is surely legitimate, ultimately, the move to go online-only and keep the content freely available is a logical and timely step forward for ICVTS. Given your continued support, we are convinced that this move will be a smooth one, and we hope to continue providing you with high-quality, ‘online-only’ papers. A final tip: if you also love to hold a hard copy in your hands and read the ICVTS in the old-school way as I do, you may want to hang on to this issue as a collector’s piece!
