THE NETHERLANDS Mushrooming Public Authorities: n Coordinated Supe sion of Competition i 4 R Nemerlamds? 3e Over the last few years, Dutch competition policy has been revised in an effort to strengthen the national economy. With an eye on changing economic circumstances and the further integration and liberalization of the economy within the European Union, the Dutch Government has pursued a revitalization of the economy by stimulating competition in the market. Competition law is one of the instruments to impiement this revised- policy. An important step was taken when the ineffective 1956 Act on Economic Competition was replaced by the 1998 Dutch competition Act (Competition Act) which established the Dutch Competition Authority (Competition Authorityj. Furthermore. legislative measures were taken to introduce competition in the telecommunications and electricity sector and plans are under discussion to do so in sectors such as gas. water and public transport.
