The Purpose of the Dictionary The expression `European private law' took its first steps in the 1980s, when for the first time it began to be affirmed in law scholar circles as a notion with a precise legal-technical significance. However, it has needed more than a quarter of a century for such an instrument to become one that holds a common understanding for all people working in law and not only for those from the academic field. The book currently being reviewed represents the tangible proof of the fulfilment of the above transition. When the scientific community feels the need to offer all legal operators a true consultation instrument, agile in content but offering a complete picture of a specific topic, as exactly by its very nature a dictionary is, one can in fact say that such a topic has finally reached full scientific dignity and complete recognition in experience. This is then the first unquestionable merit of the Handwörterbuch
