Book Review: Social Welfare and EU Law , edited by Michael Dougan and Eleanor Spaventa. (Hart... european Public law Michael Dougan and Eleanor Spaventa (eds.) Social Welfare and EU Law (Hart Publishing, Oxford, 2005) 300 pp., ISBN 1-84113-490-2, hb £38.50 Social Welfare and EU Law, edited by Michael Dougan and Eleanor Spaventa, is the ninth book in the Hart Publishing series `Essays in European Law'. The book fits well within this series, which aims to provide analyses of new developments in European Law. This volume assesses the impact of European Union membership on the provision of social welfare within the Member States and indicates that Europe is witnessing `the emergence of new models of social solidarity'. The book has its origins in a conference organized by the editors in Cambridge in 2003 and comprises a collection of twelve essays which explore various facets of social welfare and European Union law. As the editors suggest, rather than providing `an exhaustive statement of the law', this collection of essays aims instead `to convey something of the complexities, the opportunities and controversies that result from the haphazard development of a system of multi-level social solidarity in the European Union' (p. 2).
