While it does not offer a great deal of new empirical material or advance a coherent theoretical/analytical framework, it could be very useful as a teaching text on the subject of European security or as a primer for scholars wishing to develop some critical foundational knowledge in this area. The volume is organized into ten chapters. Chapter 1 is an overview chapter of `Security in the New Europe' and discusses the existence and importance of a European security community, which is the primary analytical argument offered by the book, although it is asserted throughout rather than tested rigorously. This security community, à la Karl Deutsch, involves a rejection of the use of force against community members and the use of highly institutionalized multilateral frameworks, such as the EU and NATO, to manage common problems.
