European Review of Private Law 2: 141-153, 1994. Book Reviews Jan Kropholler, Die deutsche Rechtsprechung auf dem Gebiet des Internationalen Privatrechts im Jahre 1989. Max-Planck-Institut fiir ausl5indisches und internationales Privatrecht, XX + 611 p., J.C.B. Mohr, 1991, Tiibingen. Since 1926 the Max-Planck-Institut fiir ausliindisches und internationales Privatrecht (Hamburg) collects on a yearly basis German judgements on private international law. In this volume 270 decisions from 1989 are collected and edited by Jan Kropholler and his assistants. Kropholler ascertains that the number of decisions increases every year. He foresees further growth when the reunion of Germany in 1989 and the East- European countries' borders breakdown shall elaborate on judicial decisions in the future. . . Catholic University of Brabant, Tilburg, the Netherlands G.S.C.M. VANROEYEN Gerardo, Santini, Commercio e sewizi. Due saggi di economia del diritto. Bologna (I1 Mulino), 1988,562 pp. This book brings together 'I1 commercio', published in 1979, and 'Servizi', published in 1987.As they link very well with each other, Santini had intended to compile the two books. He had updated 'I1 commercio' when he died in 1988. The publisher then decided nonetheless to fulfil Santini's intentions. Santini's perspective will be surprising to most lawyers. His book considers legal aspects of the mainly economic choices made by traders striving for maximum profit and for methods that enable them to gain maximum profit, i.e. cost- reduction, increase in scale, standardization of products and consumers, advertising, and, more recent, systematic market studies and application of scientifical marketing methods (p. 100). By choosing this perspective Santini faces the lawyer with the assessments made by traders and the consequences of their choices. Thus, his book can be a great help for those who want to understand law in action.
