The ultrastructure of the sensory receptors in the gingiva is described on the basis of material taken from ten new-born rats. The defined fine structure of the receptors at day zero suggest that they can be susceptible to tension and pression changes. They also can play a role in the ante-occlusal growth of the mandibule.
