This defect is associated with an irreversible degeneration of the gastric mucosa. It is obvious th at such a disease cannot appear suddenly and completely, as M inerva sprang fully armed from the head of Jove, for both the degeneration o f the gastric mucosa and the exhaustion of the supplies of vitamin B 12 must take some time, an d today I want to address myself briefly to the question o f what we know a b o u t the early stages of pernicious anaemia.
