Die Prognose von Frühgeborenen <1501 g ist eng an das Gestationsalter gebunden. Die Mortalität liegt zwischen 10 und 16%, wobei diese vor allem bei einem Gestationsalter ≤26 Schwangerschaftswochen hoch ist. In Bezug auf die neurologische Langzeitprognose ist die Zerebralparese mit einer Inzidenz von etwa 8% in dieser Patientengruppe die häufigste Ursache für Behinderungen. Ähnlich wie bei der Mortalität gibt es grosse Unterschiede in der Inzidenz, welche sich invers proportional zum Gestationsalter verhält. Eine klinisch verifizierte Chorioamnionitis erhöht das Risiko der Entwicklung einer Zerebralparese um bis das Vierfache.
