It has long been a common practice to distinguish between data, information, and knowledge. Information is data arranged in meaningful patterns such that it is potentially useful for decision making. Knowledge is something that is believed, and is true, effective, and reliable. Knowledge is necessarily associated with an experiential context, and so is generally more valuable than information. However, knowledge is much harder to assimilate, understand, transfer, and share than is information. Many organizational scholars, seeking enhanced performance approaches, have begun to investigate and advocate the initiation of knowledge management efforts. Many organizations are acquiring systems to enable the sharing, exchange, and integration of knowledge. Knowledge, which is created in the mind of the individuals, is often of little value to an enterprise unless it is shared. Managers are rapidly learning that just because technology exists, knowledge will not necessarily ï¬ow freely throughout an organization.
