The basic concepts of strategic management fromthe business world are of great value to universityadministrators in responding to serious threats intheir environment. Although there are strongsimilarities between business and universitystrategic management, the differences makeuniversity strategic management, and particularlythe university chief executives role in it, much moredifficult for the following reasons 1 the profitmotive in business in not present in universities2 faculty tenure restricts universities freedom toreallocate resources 3 faculty governance limitsthe authority of university administrators 4universities are more political than business 5state university systems impose many constraintson strategic management. Despite these difficultiesin implementing these business concepts inuniversities, strategic management is important forthe success or even survival of a university.
