THE SINGLE EUROPEAN MARKET DOES LABOUR MOBILITY MATTER

THE SINGLE EUROPEAN MARKET DOES LABOUR MOBILITY MATTER The Single European Market SEM represents the final stage in theprocess of economic integration of trade in goods and services and thefree movement of individuals in the European Community EC. Thediscussion of the benefits of the SEM has been concentrated primarily onthe extent to which the elimination of nontariff barriers will lead togreater economic efficiency. The progress in the creation of a singlelabour market within the EC is reviewed and the relationship betweenlabour mobility and migration in order to assess the impact of the freemovement of labour. It is argued that internal migration will generallyfall due to the free mobility of capital. Where labour embodiessignificant human capital however, migration is expected to rise inresponse to the removal of barriers. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png European Business Review Emerald Publishing

Abstract

The Single European Market SEM represents the final stage in theprocess of economic integration of trade in goods and services and thefree movement of individuals in the European Community EC.
