Provides a brief summary of an OCLC funded project,Identifying barriers to effective subject access in librarycatalogs in which the author participated and the purpose ofwhich was to determine the probability that a skilled catalogue userwould retrieve the best materials represented in the catalogue on somesubject and to determine what changes would be needed to ensure thatfuture catalogues would allow the user to retrieve more of the bettermaterials. Also provides brief perspective on research, described in thecontext of the education and research roles of the library andinformation science educator.
