The Impact of the JustinTime Approach on Production System Performance A Survey of Italian Industry

The Impact of the JustinTime Approach on Production System Performance A Survey of Italian Industry Gives results of a survey on the application of the justintimeJIT approach in Italy, based on a sample of 173 industrial companies. The methodological framework used to evaluate JIT application wasdescribed in a previous article International Journal of Operations& Production Management, Vol. 9 No. 8, 1989. Interest in JIT iswide and is growing. The evidence shows the compatibility andcomplementarity of JIT with different classes of innovation the needfor an integrative approach emerges. Pullcontrolled flow, supplyquality certification, preventive maintenance, jobenlargementenrichment and product modularization emerge as the corefeatures of JIT, even though most are widely adopted in JITimplementation. In terms of operating conditions, the most significantimprovements obtained by those who adopt JIT are a speedup inproduction flow and synchronization between production and market andbetween the different productive and logistic phases. Consequently, major benefits in production system performance are achieved in terms ofmix flexibility, workingcapital productivity and productivity of bothdirect and clerical labour. Success in JIT adoption seem not to berelated to certain exogenous factors, such as company size and type andthe nationality of ownership. As the strategic profile of a firm alsoseems irrelevant to the aims of JIT adoption JIT confirms itself as aninstrument suitable for different application contexts and diversestrategic objectives. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png International Journal of Operations & Production Management Emerald Publishing

Abstract

Gives results of a survey on the application of the justintimeJIT approach in Italy, based on a sample of 173 industrial companies.
