Abstract
Postwar world economic growth has been accompanied by a fivefoldincrease in the demand for energy 80 per cent of it met by oiland gas. However, fossil fuels are not only finite resources they alsocontribute to global warming through the buildup of carbon dioxideemissions. Renewable energy sources, such as biomass, and hydro, solarand wind power, will no doubt have an increasingly important role toplay. Yet until technology has released their potential at far lowerresource costs, the answer has to lie elsewhere in energy efficiencythe fifth fuel.
