The development of feeling in favour of tourism To many persons, the first sign of return to normal conditions after the war has been the restarting of international tourist traffic for the summer holidays. In particular, Switzerland has lived up to its reputation as the Playground of Europe. Yet the habit of travelling to and in Switzerland for a summer holiday has not always been regarded as normal. To appreciate the general state of ideas in the past and the extent of the change that has overtaken them, it is interesting to consider the writings of the distinguished French poet Joachim Du Bellay who travelled through the Grisons and Switzerland in 1557.
