The management development specialist, local or international, mustunderstand Africas historical background in order to contributeeffectively to the continents current management development needs.Important elements of management development in precolonial Africa,from which lessons can be learned for present and future managementdevelopment programmes, are outlined. The impact of the colonial periodon institutional and management development, and the need to draw onlocal resources and indigenous knowledge systems for designing andimplementing these programmes, is discussed. The institutionalinfrastructure commonly used for management development in Africa isoutlined and the objectives, challenges and opportunities of nationaland regional institutes are discussed. Finally, practical guidelines forsolicitation, design, implementation, and evaluation of managementdevelopment programmes in Africa are provided.
