The impact of the colonial periodon institutional and management development, and the need to draw onlocal resources and indigenous knowledge systems for designing andimplementing these programmes, is discussed. The institutionalinfrastructure commonly used for management development in Africa isoutlined and the objectives, challenges and opportunities of nationaland regional institutes are discussed.
