The Japanese economy, facing a severe labourshortage, may need to seek a fuller utilisation ofwomen. Circumstantial evidence about the labourshortage is described, and Japanese wage andincome tax systems are analysed, from which itis found that they are institutionally working againstwomen seeking to enter the labour market. Wageand income tax structures must be reformed if thelabour supply of women is to be increased, not tomention their economic and social advancement.
