The causes and consequences of stress are well documented. Thespecific way in which stress may affect the graduate working in smalland mediumsized enterprises SMEs is the focus. A model of stress, specific to the experiences of the graduate, which incorporates both thecauses and consequences of stress is developed and viewed as a necessaryprecursor to empirical investigation. Having highlighted how stress maymanifest for the graduate working in SMEs, interventions are suggestedwhich could reduce the all too apparent costs. An awareness of theeffects of stress, education about the working environment, and the needfor support networks, are presented as potential stress managementstrategies.
