On page 6, the book declares itself to be )3". ‘an introduction to the field of safeguarding and its theoretical base…’. However, it is not clear who the intended target audience is – social workers or post-qualifying students? The written structure and text flow is a little changeable, wanting in balance and sometimes difficult to follow. Also, its connection to relevant information in health and social care publications, including multi-agency policies and procedures, is unclear. Safeguarding Adults is useful for readers wanting to understand a little more about the relationships, roles and responsibilities that are brought to bear on this complex subject. However, the authority of the personal views and perceptions interwoven throughout the book is compromised by gaps such as serious case reviews: ‘… my experience as a social worker and manager, tells me finance is…’ (p11) ‘I would like to draw a parallel argument that…’ (p15) ‘I have stated throughout this book…’ (p55) Chapter 6, What has safeguarding adults to do with discrimination and oppression? (pg 64) starts with ‘Relevance of this chapter may not be immediately obvious…’. This is correct. I did not understand the purpose of the chapter, its connection with the body of the text or what it is was trying to achieve.
