MY first meeting with the distinguished humorist goes back to 1903, when he consented to sit to me for his penportrait, which a leading New York weekly was anxious to publish. During the sitting he gave me he was very communicative, and I regret that my efforts distracted me at the time from the conversation, which I have consequently forgotten in great part, though I remember him saying I am afraid you are one of the few people who would be willing to pay me to keep me quiet. I assured him that such was by no means the case, and that, far from interfering with the progress of the picture, it helped me.
