8 PIGMENT AND RESIN TECHNOLOGY NOVEMBER 1982 Rapid dispersing rheological additives to simplify paint manufacture A new rapidly dispersing organoclay thickener, whic h is said to offer cost savings to paint manufac turers, is being launched world-wid e by NL Chemicals. The new organoclay — Bentone SD-1 — is claimed to represent a significant breakthrough in rheological additiv e technology, and will greatly simplify the manufacturin g process of solvent-based paints, speed ing up throughput, achieving more flexible and trouble- free production whilst maintaining product quality. Organoclay rheological additives are not only thickeners but also provide control of viscosity and pigmen t settling and at the same time ensure correct applicatio n properties. Existing organoclay additives give excellent contro l of coatings rheology, but their use requires precise control of paint manufacturing conditions. In order to obtain full dispersion and activation a time- consumin g procedure must be followed, often involv ing premix. Even small errors at this stage can result in paint with viscosity, storage and application pro blems.
