Education and training structures in Britain andFrance have been inadequate to meet the changinglabour market demands placed on them in recentyears. In France, relatively early reform, theintroduction of more vocationally relevant materialinto the school curriculum and the imposition oftraining obligations on employers differ markedlyfrom the recent adoption of a more vocationallyrelevant curriculum in British schools and theestablishment of a voluntary, businessled anddecentralised industrial training system. Some ofthe actual and potential strengths and weaknessesof these approaches are discussed.
