This feasibility study originated from a requestfrom a highquality confectionery manufacturerand retailer for research into the possibility ofassessing the interaction of multiple outlets in thesame town. The particular problem was that ofestimating pedestrian flow patterns so that thesiting of new outlets would not attract businessaway from existing outlets of the same company.Various methods of collecting pedestrian data werereviewed, and for reasons of cost and practicalityit was decided to concentrate on tracking 105 citycentretrips and pointcounting methods. Timelapsephotography was used for point counting,being the only method capable of handling thevolume of pedestrians 7,267. A number ofcomputer programs were written which allowedthe photographic data to be transformed into anetwork flow model. A fullscale test of the modelwas made using data collected by Nottingham CityCouncil for a network of 57 links.
