The evolution of the notforprofit organisation sector in theIsraeli economy is described, combining economic theory together withhistory and ideology to provide a multidimensional explanation of thisimportant phenomenon. Why some activities are performed bynotforprofit organisations instead of, or in addition to, forprofitfirms and government institutions is outlined, and explanations for theexistence of NPOs in various fields of public service are offered.
