WHEN I succeeded in crossing the Channel on July 25, 1909, no one obviously believed that it was simply a matter of good luck. I do not say, especially after so long an interval, that I was not favoured by the chance factor. But it should be remembered that since 1899 I had devoted all my time and money to solving the problem which constantly provided me with fresh difficulties.
