Purpose – The purpose of this column is to examine the current discussion of massive open online courses (MOOCs) and the library's involvement in this worldwide movement. Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes the form of a literature review and commentary on this topic that has been addressed by professionals, researchers and practitioners. Findings – The study finds that MOOCs may offer colleges the opportunity to accept the democratization of learning for all who wish to engage. Librarians have a chance to extend their influence in the development of MOOCs as an integral component in this new model. Originality/value – The value in addressing this issue is to suggest the benefits that the library can bring to this burgeoning form of online learning.
